On February 22, 2017, the cargo vessel “MV Tide Carrier” encountered engine problems, got in distress west of lighthouse Feistein and started drifting towards shallow
waters and land.

Two local tugs from Buksér og Berging AS (BB) were called out for tow connection and emergency towage. It was harsh weather and the waves were as high as 10 meters. The waves breaking around the shallow waters made the space for maneuvering limited.

“PLT from Restech Norway made the tow connection and emergency towage possible”

Luckily, BB’s tug were equipped with Pneumatic Line Thrower (PLT) from Restech Norway and the crew have had frequent drills with using the equiptment. It took the crew only one attempt to get the PLT ball projectile onboard the casualty, even though the distance between the casualty and the tug were about 40-60 meters.

In the report from the rescue mission, the crew’s experience and the reliability of the PLT is highlighted as essential for such operations, and a key factor for a successful towline connection.
